Sanitary Sewer Overflow at 2909 Newcastle Street in Brunswick – March 23, 2022

The Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water Sewer Commission, NPDES Permit GA0025313, in accordance with permit requirements, makes public notice of a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at the Academy Creek Water Pollution Control Facility.

Location of Spill:        2909 Newcastle Street Brunswick, Georgia 31520

Cause of Spill:            Due to the ongoing construction activities at the plant, hydraulic issues were present at high flow between the final clarifiers and tertiary filters. Heavy rainfall increased plant flow levels rapidly causing the backup between the clarifiers and filters.

Estimated Volume:    28,000 gallons

Receiving Stream:     Academy Creek (Satilla River Basin)

Corrective Actions Taken:  Vacuum trucks were able to recover a portion of the overflow. Weir plates installed to divert flow into filter structure temporarily have been removed. Modifications to influent weirs on filters will occur prior to filter structure being brought back online.

This notification is being provided to Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Glynn County Department of Public Health, the Brunswick News, and local iHeartRadio stations.
