Smoke Testing Project – Final Update – July 6, 2025

As part of our continued partnership with the Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water and Sewer Commission, McKim & Creed will begin fieldwork for the Smoke and Dye Testing Services Project on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Distribution of smoke notices began on October 27th, 2025, and smoke testing was started October 28th, 2025. Because of Brantly County forest fires in southwestern Georgia, all field work was temporarily suspended in early May 2026. After the suspension was lifted, field work was completed on May 18th, 2026. Within the basins selected for inspection, 1,069,148 feet of mainline smoke was tested. A total of 1123 defects were located during the smoke testing, and these are summarized below by defect type and area.

Each smoke defect was reviewed, and a repair recommendation was created. These recommendations were assigned a priority ranking of 1 to 3 based on the following criteria:

  • Priority 1 defects are recommended to be repaired first, and these are typically located in
    locations subject to larger amounts of runoff such as depressions, ditches, area drains or
    stormwater structures.
  • Priority 2 repair recommendations generally include manhole covers in streets, cleanout
    defects in yards, and similar inflow sources.
  • Priority 3 is assigned to smoke defects that are likely to contribute the least amount of
    inflow but still should be considered for repair. These defects may be above grade and
    not subject to runoff during a typical rain event but could still contribute extraneous flows
    through direct rainfall or during extreme events that may cause flooding around the
    defect.
